This course explores advanced techniques for strengthening masonry arches using lime-based composites, with a focus on historic preservation and seismic resilience. Participants will gain insights into the benefits of basalt fibre and lime mortar systems over traditional fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP), including improved thermal resistance, compatibility with historic structures, and enhanced structural behaviour. Case studies and experimental data will illustrate the effectiveness of these materials in increasing the load-carrying capacity and ductility of masonry arches while maintaining their architectural integrity.
Key topics include the comparative analysis of lime-based composites versus cementitious and polymeric alternatives, implementation methodologies for historic masonry, and the sustainability aspects of using natural materials.
By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge to implement lime-based composites in the restoration and strengthening of historic masonry, aligning engineering solutions with conservation ethics.
