About This Course

Because of their many energy-saving and environmental benefits, green roofs are a promising technology for energy-efficient buildings. In a green roof, a layer of vegetation covers the surface of a roof to provide shade, cool indoor and outdoor temperatures, stormwater management, and more. The main components are waterproofing, soil, and plants. This 32 page, 3 hour course covers applications, federal sector potentials, technology performance, development, and outlook. In addition, case studies and systems examples are given.

Topics: Potential Applications of Greenroofs Barriers to Implementation Benefits and Variations Architectural Criteria Potentials for use in the Federal Sector Where to apply, and what to avoid Installation Procedures for Greenroofs Integrating Greenroofs into existing structures Maintenance Requirements Issues with structure warranties Industry standards Complying with building code Construction and Operating Costs Utility Incentives Programs and Support Case Study Technology Performance, Development, and Outlook.

Intended Audience: civil, energy, environmental, and construction engineers. However, this course could appeal to engineers of other disciplines as well.
