About This Course

Explore the transformative world of Permeable Pavements: Applications, Design & Maintenance. This comprehensive course, led by seasoned expert David Hine, dives deep into the critical role of permeable pavements in modern urban development and stormwater management. Discover how these innovative systems address environmental challenges, from reducing runoff and improving water quality to mitigating flood risks and recharging aquifers.

Beginning with a foundational introduction to permeable pavement systems, the course meticulously distinguishes between pervious concrete, porous asphalt, and permeable interlocking concrete pavements (PICP), highlighting their unique characteristics and applications. You'll gain insights into the historical context and the pressing need for sustainable infrastructure solutions in urbanized areas, including discussions on combined sewer overflows and the financial implications of water management.

The curriculum is structured to provide a holistic understanding, covering:

  • Site Suitability & Selection: Learn to evaluate environmental factors, soil conditions, and hydrological considerations to select the optimal permeable pavement type for any project.
  • Advanced Design Principles: Master the intricacies of structural and hydrological design, integrating concepts like full, partial, and no-infiltration systems. The course introduces practical software applications and the ASCE 68-18 standard for design and analysis, including insights from accelerated pavement testing and mechanistic-empirical design approaches.
  • Construction Best Practices: Understand the critical elements of successful installation, from subgrade preparation and material selection to compaction techniques and quality control measures. Emphasis is placed on avoiding common pitfalls and ensuring proper protection during construction.
  • Effective Maintenance Strategies: Develop robust maintenance plans, covering everything from routine cleaning and sediment removal to addressing clogging, repairs, and winter maintenance challenges. Learn to interpret infiltration test results and implement permeability improvements to extend pavement longevity.
  • Case Studies & Real-World Applications: Analyze compelling examples, including a detailed look at the successful implementation of PICP in Berkeley, California, porous asphalt in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and the invaluable lessons learned from a pervious concrete installation in Williamsburg, Virginia.
  • Off-Road Benefits & Life Cycle Costing: Quantify the broader economic and environmental advantages of permeable pavements through life cycle cost analysis, exploring savings related to stormwater management, pollutant removal, winter maintenance, and impervious surface fees.

By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to confidently apply, design, and maintain permeable pavement systems, contributing to more resilient, sustainable, and economically viable infrastructure projects.
