About This Course

Successful residential developments are not defined solely by planning approval—they are shaped by the quality of the design decisions made long before construction begins. From site appraisal and apartment layouts to technical coordination and buildability, small design improvements can unlock significant commercial value while delivering better outcomes for developers, occupants, and communities.

This practical course explores how architects can identify missed opportunities and optimise schemes through a structured design review process. Participants will gain practical strategies for improving site utilisation, residential quality, technical performance, and project viability, enabling them to maximise development value without necessarily increasing a building's footprint.

Key Topics Discussed:

  • Evaluating residential developments to identify hidden value
  • Site appraisal and planning strategies for better project outcomes
  • Optimising apartment mix, layouts, and site utilisation
  • Improving buildability through technical design coordination
  • Balancing planning, design quality, and commercial objectives
  • Identifying common design and technical inefficiencies
  • Applying structured design review frameworks
  • Lessons from real-world residential development case studies
